HAT past papers and recalled questions: how to use them

Past questions are most useful when you understand their source and the reasoning behind the answer. Begin by identifying what kind of material you have.

Three different kinds of material

TypeWhat it meansHow to use it
Official samplePublished by HEC through its own website.Study the published wording and instructions. Match the sample to the relevant programme and category.
Recalled questionReconstructed from a test taker’s memory or a compilation.Check whether all conditions and answer options are present. Treat dates and wording as uncertain unless documented.
Original practiceA teaching exercise created to practise a skill.Use it to learn and test a method. It is not evidence that the exact question appeared in an exam.

Start with HEC’s official sample-paper collection. HATprep’s recalled-question bank is an independent compilation, not a set of authenticated official papers. Access to questions depends on your plan.

A four-step review method

  1. Attempt: solve the question without its key and note your confidence.
  2. Justify: write the equation, sentence clue or logical constraint that supports the answer.
  3. Challenge: test the closest wrong option. Look for ambiguity or missing information.
  4. Transfer: solve another question with different numbers or wording that uses the same idea.

Worked example: a changing percentage base

Original teaching example

A price increases by 20% and then falls by 20%. Compared with the original price, what is the overall change?

Show the reasoning

Start with 100. After the increase, the price is 120. The reduction is 20% of 120, which is 24. The final price is 96: a 4% decrease.

The two percentages have different bases, so they do not cancel. In multiplier form, 1.20 × 0.80 = 0.96. Adding 20 and −20 would ignore the changed base.

What to do with an unclear question

For an arrangement puzzle, try to produce two valid layouts. If they give different answers to a “must be true” question, either information is missing or the key needs review. For a numerical item, check units and rounding. For a verbal item, distinguish a close association from the precise relationship asked for.

Note the question’s topic and wording, your solution and the point of disagreement when reporting an issue. Do not memorize a doubtful answer merely because it appears in a compiled key.

Use the question bank by topic

The bank lets you move from a weak skill to more practice. Work on a small set, read each explanation and return to mistakes later. Recalled questions and original exercises are practice resources, not guarantees about the next paper.
