HEC HAT preparation: where to start

A useful preparation plan starts with your programme’s requirements and a clear picture of the skills you need to practise.

HATprep study guide · Updated 21 October 2026 · Free to read

Check the right requirements first

Read the admission or scholarship announcement for the programme you are applying to. Record the required test, stream, application deadline and any score or validity requirements. Similar-looking programme names can have different requirements. A practice website’s category selector is not a substitute for that announcement.

Use the official HEC ETC portal for registration and the HEC sample-paper page for official sample materials. Confirm dates, fees, eligibility, documents and instructions in the current notice. This guide does not announce a registration deadline or a universal passing score.

Understand the three reasoning areas

Quantitative

Translate a question into a relationship: a percentage, ratio, equation, rate or diagram. Check units and whether your answer is reasonable.

Learn percentages →

Verbal

Read for evidence and meaning. Practise sentence logic, word relationships, contextual vocabulary and careful reading.

Learn sentence completion →

Analytical

Turn conditions into a diagram or table. Distinguish what must be true from what is merely possible.

Take a small baseline before a long mock

Try the free 15-minute diagnostic without notes. It samples five questions in each reasoning area and suggests where to begin. It is an orientation tool with equal section counts, not a stream-weighted exam or a prediction of your HAT score.

For every mistake, ask which step failed: understanding the question, choosing a method, calculation, or time management. Two students with the same score may need very different study sessions.

Use a learn–practise–review routine

  1. Learn: read one short lesson and solve its example before checking the answer.
  2. Practise: attempt a small group of similar questions. Explain the method without copying the solution.
  3. Review: write the reason for each mistake, then solve a different question that uses the same idea.
  4. Return: revisit difficult questions after a gap. A remembered answer alone does not prove that you understand the method.

Follow the 30-day preparation framework, then use the study app to track your tasks. Select the stream named in your programme’s notice when opening a full mock.

Choose materials you can trust

Keep official sample papers, recalled questions and original teaching exercises clearly separated. Recalled wording may be incomplete; an unofficial answer key can contain mistakes. A strong explanation should establish the answer from the question’s conditions and explain why close alternatives fail.

Our public worked examples are original teaching exercises. HATprep is an independent preparation platform and is not affiliated with HEC or ETC. Read the guide to using past questions before treating a collection as an official paper.

Examples on this page are original teaching exercises. For exam dates, eligibility, required stream and official instructions, consult the current HEC notice and ETC portal.
