Sentence completion: predict the meaning before the options

An unfamiliar option is easier to judge when you already know what the sentence needs. Read the logic, predict a simple meaning, then compare.

Mark the sentence’s direction

Words such as although, however and yet often introduce a contrast. Because and therefore connect a reason and a result. Read the whole sentence: a clue after the blank can be more useful than the words immediately before it.

“Although the proposal was popular, the director remained ____ because its costs were uncertain.” Popularity is positive, but although signals a change in direction. Uncertain costs explain the hesitation. Predict “careful” or “doubtful” before reading the options.

Compare all the options

Suppose the choices are enthusiastic, indifferent, cautious and celebratory. Cautious fits both the contrast and the uncertainty. Enthusiastic and celebratory ignore the contrast. Indifferent describes lack of interest, which the sentence does not establish.

For two blanks, both words must fit. Reject a pair if either one breaks the grammar, tone or logical relationship. Do not choose an option only because one word feels familiar.

Read vocabulary in context

“The evidence was meagre: only one incomplete record survived.” The explanation after the colon tells you that the evidence is limited. Scanty fits; precise or convincing does not follow.

Record vocabulary with a short context. “Her resolve never weakened” uses resolve as a noun meaning determination. “They will resolve the dispute” uses it as a verb meaning settle. A single memorized synonym does not cover every use.

Keep analogy relationships precise

For thermometer : temperature, write “A thermometer measures temperature.” Barometer : pressure preserves that relationship and its direction. Telescope : star is a looser association: a telescope observes a star, but a star is not the measured quantity in the same relationship.

Make your sentence specific enough to distinguish options, but do not invent an unsupported detail just to force a match.

Check grammar separately

In “Each of the reports has been checked,” each is the singular subject. The plural noun reports belongs to the intervening phrase. Locate the subject before choosing has or have.

For parallel structures, compare the grammatical forms: “reading, swimming and cycling” follows a consistent pattern. Tense and modifier questions need the same careful reading of structure.

Try three quick checks

1. A result clue

The instructions were so ____ that no one needed clarification: obscure, explicit, contradictory or incomplete?

Answer and reason

Explicit. The result indicates that the instructions were clear and directly stated. Each other option would create a reason to seek clarification.

2. A contrast clue

Despite the complex subject, her explanation was ____: lucid, irrelevant, lengthy or uncertain?

Answer and reason

Lucid, meaning clear. Despite sets up a contrast between a complex subject and an understandable explanation. Length is not the contrast established here.

3. A contextual opposite

In “The market remained volatile,” which is the best opposite of volatile: stable, harmless, cold or profitable?

Answer and reason

Stable. Volatile describes changeability here. Harmless and cold relate to other possible associations, while profitable concerns a different dimension.
